Dear Coach Our son is just starting to play and we are wondering what kind of stick to purchase for our son, he is 6 and 20 kgs. Greg
HI Greg! I recommend for all beginners to buy inexpensive hockey sticks. Idealy they should have a straight blade, wood is good and make sure they ONLY come up to the bottom of his chin when he is NOT on his skates. Make sure it is a JUNIOR size stick. The smaller the blade the easier it is to handle. They do NOT need an expensive stick now or for many years in their future as they will not have to tools or strength needed to take advantage of those extra dollars, spend that money on a good helmet and elbow pads

Dear Coach Our daughter is 4 and wanting to play hockey but the program suggests the kids should be 5. What should we do? Bob and Denise
HI Bob and Denise, I personally believe you should wait. Let your daughter skate and skate and skate so that next year she will do really well from the get go! If a child starts at 4 then they get 3 years at the TYKE level and that can be very boring the 3rd year, additionally if cant skate when they start to play then they do not enjoy it as much. Skating is the key!

Dear Coach My son is 12 and wants to referee should I let him. Rick
HI Rick, Refereeing is a great way to get extra ice, to work on your skating, a little money and once you have advanced and done it for a few years when you referee at higher levels you can learn about the game of hockey, so WIN WIN WIN WIN in my opinion. You may need to support him this year, he may receive some negative "feedback" but if he does please address that immediately with the Minor Hockey Association and be as factual and objective as possible. While verbaling abusing Referees is not acceptable it occurs and you need to be prepared to discuss this with ur son and support him. As we used to say "sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never harm me" nothing wrong with being mentally tough.

Sorry we have not been at all the ice times, we've done allot of camping this year. But for what we have been there for, you've been amazing with the kids and I have noticed a LARGE improvement with Joseph’s game!!
